I made this sign as a gift for my mother. It was inspired by an historic picture of the Sinclair Gas Station that my grandfather owned and operated in Brooktondale, NY. The station was later converted into a home for their growing family.
I used a traditional drop shadow effect and weathering techniques to give the sign an authentic feel. I purposely used a broken piece of plywood as the substrate to enhance the sense of aging.
Observing and studying original signs and how they age has given me the ability to recreate subtle effects, such as how the centers of letters often age faster than the edges where a sign writer's brush stroke would have resulted in a slightly thicker layer of paint.
